What an absolute gem! The food menu is beautifully curated, and the cocktail and wine list is fantastic. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and gave us some amazing wine recommendations. The setting is stunning, with gorgeous gardens and plenty of space to relax. It’s kid- and dog-friendly, with a paddock full of games to keep both kids and adults entertained. There are plenty of seating options, whether you prefer to be outside or under the marquee, with lots of shade available. We also loved the live music and the convenience of the shuttle bus service for a small fee—such a great touch! We’ll definitely be back soon!

(3.5 stars) Like a wedding venue gone rogue, Altar Wine Bar opens up the grounds of an 1883 church to all comers. A deep block back from Milton’s main drag, and a few doors up from the former St. Isidore, it’s a mostly outdoor affair, bar for a large marquee. Well-spaced tables nestle among the foliage, shaded by both umbrellas and trees. A two-piece outfit creates the musical backdrop to our visit. The French cocktail bartender doubles as an air-conditioned van driver, and, for a tenner apiece, will pick you up and drop you back to Airbnbs as far afield as Lake Conjola. It all adds up to a pretty good place to untwist the screw cap on a 2021 Louis Jadot Petit Chablis ($80/bottle) and while away an hour or two. Guided by our bartender-come-bus driver, we skip over spring rolls and dumplings “you can eat anywhere” in favour of meat. First, thin slices of cured beef tri tip ($20) under olive oil, fresh rocket leaves and Parmesan, and later, an even better barbequed beef short rib ($45) lined with an affable chimmichurri to cut the fat. Focaccia ($14) arrives painted with oil alongside a flavourless almond whip. Going off script with Japanese scallop crudo ($32) was a mistake. The scallops were diced with an odd combination of ginger, coconut, apple and daikon radish, and presented as a mince that might have worked better scooped onto prawn crackers. Oysters ($5/each) from Narooma Bridge were a little drier than shucked-to-order, but their flavour was on point. The overall experience here however is greater than the sum of its parts.

I can’t believe that we haven’t discovered this gem until recently. It is a beautiful venue. We enjoyed the outdoor setting very much and really enjoyed the casual and relaxed atmosphere. The food was served very quickly - the prawn dumplings were delicious. And the cocktails were very good. And our Assistance dog in training , Lenny enjoyed his water bowl and the setting. We will be back.

We enjoyed a nibbly dinner and wine here with our one year old daughter a few nights ago, and we instantly fell in love with the gorgeous trees overhanging the tables, the garden flowers and relaxed atmosphere. We loved the live music and the lawn games, and the service was warm and friendly, staff offering us blankets as the evening got cooler. The perfect twinkling, country setting for an evening with family and friends.
